5 Simple Winter Travel Tips

Traveling during the winter can be a great way to escape the cold weather for warmer climates, but it is important to take precautions when traveling in order to avoid any unnecessary problems. Here are some common tips that we already know, but sometimes need reminders

                                                              Travel Documents:
Another simple travel tip is to make sure your passport hasn’t expired! Many people forget about this little rule, so don’t be one of them. The last thing you want is your trip being cut short because of something silly like an out-of-date passport. Even if you are travelling locally, be sure your driver’s license has not expired.

You will be amazed as to how many people find out their documents are expired while at the airport. Purchase tickets at least 2 weeks ahead of time and be sure to confirm its valid at least two days ahead for time. Also checking in prior to going to the airport, saves time.

Print your paper boarding pass if you still do that, otherwise all boarding passes can be downloaded to your phone for easy access.

In this Pandemic world, we MUST look at the Covid information of our destination and plan accordingly. For example, you should check with airlines to see if the accept a PCR covid test or a Rapid result option. Most countries and airlines opt for the PCR covid test that is valid within 72 hours of travel.

Testing and or Vaccine cards have not been mandated yet for local USA travels. If planning to travel this holiday, do your due diligence and know what the requirements and or restrictions are for your destination.

Have your vaccination card and yellow card in some cases, ready and valid to show when needed.  Stay in compliance and wear your mask to have ease in travel.  Be sure you can return to your country of origin before leaving, due to travel bans coming in daily.

Traveling by train or car might not have these restrictions, but it is better to be safe than sorry. So, check and confirm before your set out to go anywhere this holiday season

                                                                           Weather:

Winter weather can be very unpredictable sometimes. Keep an eye on the forecast! While some places may look inviting during these chilly months, there could still be snow or rain where you’re headed. Don’t risk getting stuck in bad weather. Pack accordingly in the event that your flight is delayed or even cancelled. Dressing in layers is recommended.

Note that it might not be snowing when you are leaving your home destination, but it could be on your return. So always have a coat, a small blanket, hat and thick socks. These items will come in handy when you have to spend long hours at the airport or arrive at a colder place. You can shed these items while in the plane, car or train. On the road you might come across bad weather and have to seek shelter. Another time when you will need warm items.

Be sure to check the weather at your location. Though they might not be completely accurate, it will give you a good idea of what to pack. Having enough space in your suitcase is usually an issue when traveling from one cold location to another. Because warm clothing is heavier and takes up a lot of space, it is advisable to wear your heaviest items on your person to allow for a little more room for other stuff.

While you may be excited to escape the cold weather for sunnier days in a tropical destination or even another country, it’s important to remember that different seasons have different risks, especially when traveling abroad.

                                   The Travel and Gift Situation:

Most people travel during the holidays to spend time with friends and family. Holiday season calls for gift giving. If possible, MAIL all gifts prior to travel. Nowadays gifts can be mailed directly to their owners when you purchase on line. Only carry smaller gifts items that will not create a suitcase overweight situation. This can be a very stressful scenario especially during the holidays when airports are packed full with travelers.

Pack light and smart – Pack only what is necessary for your trip. Don’t bring anything extra or unnecessary just because it was given to you as a gift. This also means not bringing gifts back home unless they fit in your luggage.

                                                                     SAFETY:

Winter season means many people are getting ready for their holiday trips. You may be looking forward to escaping the cold by going somewhere warmer like Hawaii or another country but it’s important that you keep yourself safe while on vacation this time of year because different seasons can come with certain risks depending on where you’re headed. Holiday travel can be a stressful time of year.

From packing to traffic, there are many things that could go wrong. Plan to arrive at the airport at least three hours ahead of time. Allow room for traffic so you don’t get frustrated when it happens, or even get in an accident because you are rushing to catch a flight or train.

Ladies it is a safety issue when you don’t have the right shoes. This might not seem important, but when you are running to your gate, you might just tumble over with those high heels and ruin your whole trip. Wear comfortable shoes always when on the road. This is a very simple winter travel tip. Tight boots will be problematic to take off and put on at the security line.

We are still in the pandemic era so that means, not attending crowded events, staying several inches away from people. Avoid shaking hands if you can, or close hugs. Carry hand sanitizer, wipes, sprays, hand soap and even gloves. Avoid touching all surfaces or be sure to wipe them down before use. http://ec-travels.com/international-vs-local-pandemic-travels

An extra boost to air travel:

Traveling during the holidays can be hectic. If you are flying, there is security to get through and maybe long lines at check-in or baggage claim. The airports are full of travelers, so it can take a while to find your gate. And then once you’re on the plane, there’s probably not enough leg room for your knees!

Invest in TSA or CLEAR if you are a frequent traveler, they come in really handy during peak travel times like the holidays. Winter travel includes two main holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. We are back to almost pre-pandemic travel rates. Just this thanksgiving triple A estimated 50,000 travelers within the 50 states, going by road, air and train.

My last experience at Hartsfield international airport confirmed why I got TSA and CLEAR for my travel convenience. The lines even at these security outlets were taking 45minutes to an hour to go through, needless to say the regular line took more than an hour and half. So, you never know when it’s going to be long line day at which airport. Better to be armed with these tools.

Traveling is a great way to see the world and take in new experiences. There are many ways to travel; some people like to take long road trips or even go on cruises, while others prefer city breaks or even backpacking adventures. Regardless of what type of trip you’re planning, it’s important that you plan ahead and think about your destination and how best to get there before embarking on your journey.
